CANADA-AFGHANISTAN PARLIAMENTARY FRIENDSHIP GROUP HOLDS A VIRTUAL GENERAL MEETING

The General Meeting of the Canada-Afghanistan Parliamentary Friendship Group (CAPFG) was held virtually this afternoon and was co-chaired by Hon. MP Francesco Sorbara and Hon. Senator Salma Ataullahjan. Ambassador Hassan Soroosh briefed the participants about the Afghan peace process, the spike in the levels of violence and targeted assassinations in Afghanistan, the need for a ceasefire and the key points of national and international consensus with the respect to the peace process including the preservation of the gains of the past 19 years. Ambassador Soroosh also spoke about the recent Afghanistan Conference 2020, bilateral development cooperation, the recent high-level bilateral exchanges including the recent phone conversation between H.E. President Ghani and the Honorable Prime Minister Trudeau. Ambassador Soroosh also informed the Group about the formation of Afghanistan-Canada Parliamentary Friendship Group under the Upper House of Afghanistan and expressed hope that an inter-parliamentary friendship group between the two countries will be established very soon.
The co-chairs of CAPFG and the rest of participating MPs and Senators expressed their commitment to continued collaboration and engagement in support of Afghanistan and greater parliamentary linkages between the two countries.
Mr. Sayed Mujtaba Ahmadi, Deputy Chief of Mission and Ms. Shabana Kargar, Head of the Social Affairs Section of the Embassy also attended this virtual meeting.
